The Indian Historical Context of Fashion

India is a home to lexicon of arts, craftmanship and designs. Its history is stitched with stories weaved behind the threads of fashion. The ancient Indian Maharajas and Maharanis were also great fashion-enthusiasts, adorned with contemporary Indian fabrics. Each fabric tells a legacy, exclusivity and artistry in it. It is the heritage that has evolved with the centuries and has been brought towards the current pace of futuristic fashion.

The ancient weaving techniques, handcrafts, brocade art and multiple other ways were used to embrace the royal clothing for Indians. People were intensively fascinated by the authenticity of Indian craftmanship. Every piece of thread and fabric has been a part of empires established, artisans strived, cultures and craftmanship born. At the same point of time, Kinkhab’s inspiration lies in the incredible beauty of fashion which was existent within the past decades and can be reimagined again.

It was the time when royalty wasn’t just adorned, but it was also worn. Various fabric like Bandhani from Gujrat, Chanderi from Madhya Pradesh, Kanchivaram from Tamil Nadu, Banarasi silk and Khinkhab from Varanasi, Leheriya and Zari from Rajasthan formed the benchmarks of our ethnic clothing. Furthermore, weaving techniques like Chikankaari from Lucknow,  Jardosi from Rajasthan and Pichwai work from Nathdwara has shaped the fashion-sense of India. The beauty of these fabrics are a testament of luxury wrapped in tradition.

At Kinkhab, we have embarked on a mission to revive the soul of Indian heritage and represent it through our brand. Somewhere along the way, we have forgotten the intricate art of banarasi silk or the warmth of bandhani cotton prints. Hence, we looked at the provision that what if tradition could lead the future and this tradition would be reflected through our brand’s fusion technique. We are into mixing past with the future that gives rise to a whole new woven story. The blissful pieces of clothes at Kinkhab represent this fusion incredibly by being crafted from authentic fabrics but being organically streetwear.  Because this aspect of fashion shouldn’t be extinct, it should be within ourselves and the contemporary world. Our idea and inspiration lies in the beauty of these intricate artworks to reinterpret the current fashion trends. Afterall, Kinkhab is built with the belief that our tradition can also be cool and modern with pride.
